No, of course not :). You can do prety much everything from code too.
You can simply send a local event by having a reference to the FSMOwner, or a global event by calling the static method:

//local events

var owner = GetComponent<FSMOwner>();

owner.SendEvent("MyEvent");

owner.SendEvent<float>("MyFloatEvent", 12.1f);

//global

Graph.SendGlobalEvent("MyGlobalEvent");

Graph.SendGlobalEvent<float>("MyGlobalFloatEvent", 12.1f);
