It is possible to set the variables in runtime. How are you setting the variable though?
Do you use the Blackboard API directly like the blackboard.SetValue method, or are you doing it through a flowscript and if yes, can you please share a screenshot of the relevant nodes used in that part of the graph?
I am honestly unable to replicate the issue, considering I understood what you are doing correctly.
